MU Physician Named Chair of National Committee
Columbia, Mo. (April 20, 2005) - A researcher with the Missouri Arthritis Rehabilitation Research and Training Center (MARRTC) at the University of Missouri-Columbia continues to make a difference on a national level. Sara E. Walker, M.D., professor of Internal Medicine at the MU School of Medicine and co-principal investigator for MARRTC, was appointed chair of the Outreach Committee for the American College of Physicians Foundation at the American College of Physicians Annual Session last week in San Francisco. Walker also will serve as chair of the national Nominations Committee of the American College of Physicians for 2005-2006.
"I am delighted to work on behalf of the American College of Physicians," Walker says. "This organization advocates for 116,000 physicians and medical students."
Walker has been a member of the Veterans' Administration's Merit Review Board on Immunology and the National Institutes of Health Study Section on Immunology and Virology. She also is a past president of the American College of Physicians and was an Einbender Distinguished Lecturer in Medical Research on Lupus.
"Dr. Walker is a tremendous asset to the University of Missouri-Columbia and to MARRTC," says Jerry C. Parker, director of MARRTC and associate chief of staff for research and development at the Harry S Truman Memorial Veterans' Hospital. "She is an extraordinarily compassionate physician who also excels in the research, teaching, and service arenas. Her national leadership is widely recognized and greatly appreciated."
Walker has served as director of the MU Fellowship Program in Immunology and Rheumatology. She has 94 research publications in peer-reviewed journals; 23 reviews and book chapters, 23 clinical publications and 102 published abstracts. She has authored 29 papers with internal medicine residents and rheumatology fellows.
