MARRTC Researcher Wins Prestigious Professional Award
Columbia, Mo. (Nov. 23, 2005) - Researcher John Hewett, Ph.D., from the Missouri Arthritis Rehabilitation Research and Training Center (MARRTC), received the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Association of Rheumatology Health Professionals (ARHP), the highest honor bestowed by the organization.
"This award is extremely meaningful to me since it is real evidence that I have spent most of my career doing something meaningful to individuals other than myself," Hewett said. "It means that I have had a positive impact on the arthritis community."
Hewett received the award at a Nov. 15 ceremony in San Diego, Calif., at the annual scientific meeting of the American College of Rheumatology.
"When I received the award I felt very humble realizing that there are many individuals who had a very positive impact on my career," Hewett added. "The things that I have accomplished were not done by me alone but were accomplished with the support and input from several individuals."
Hewett is the director of Biostatistics at the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine and the senior biostatistics adviser for MARRTC. He is also the recipient of the ARHP Merit Award for Distinguished Scholarship. His areas of expertise include multivariate analysis, distribution theory, and biostatistics.
Hewett recently launched two online courses on research methods and biostatistical concepts. The first course is designed for people with arthritis or their caregivers who wish to improve their understanding of potential treatments. The second course is geared toward people interested in research methodologies, such as healthcare providers and practitioners. For more information on these courses, go to www.marrtc.org/research/summaries.html and click on Project 5.
The Missouri Arthritis Research Rehabilitation and Training Center (MARRTC) was established in 1971 at the University of Missouri-Columbia Arthritis Center. MARRTC is funded by the U.S. Department of Education's National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (H133B031120) and is the only federally funded arthritis rehabilitation research and training center in the country.
As part of the MU Health Communication Research Center (HCRC), MARRTC's mission is to become a national leader in the areas of disability management and communication, improve the quality of life and promote independent living among people who have arthritis and arthritic conditions. MARRTC's core message is "Disability is everyone's issue."
