MARRTC Student Volunteer Wins Fellowship in E-Research

Columbia, Mo. (Dec. 1, 2005) - Mizzou sophomore Christine Burmann recently won a $1,000 research fellowship for her volunteer work at the Missouri Arthritis Rehabilitation Research and Training Center (MARRTC). Burmann, who studies to become a clinical nurse, started volunteering for MARRTC's project 1 in August. Project 1 is an online program (www.RAHelp.org), directed by Karen L. Smarr, Ph.D., designed to help people with rheumatoid arthritis cope more effectively and manage their rheumatoid arthritis. Online topics of discussions include stress management, fatigue management, pain management, effective coping and managing change. Burmann, of St. Louis, was intrigued by the project because it offered her a chance to see theory and practice at work both at the same time.

"I was looking for a way to get some research experience related to nursing," Burmann says. "Also, I was interested in becoming involved with a research project. I thought it would be a good opportunity to learn something new, as well as meet new people."

Burmann plans to continue her education after she gets her nursing degree and become a family nurse practitioner. She wants to work with children or older adults.

The fellowship was awarded by the University of Missouri-Columbia Center for E-Research, whose goal is to foster interdisciplinary collaboration in Internet-based research. She will receive mentoring throughout the fellowship from Smarr, who will allow her to continue to be exposed to health services research.

"The fellowship offers Christine a great opportunity to expand her awareness of e-Health research in our project, as well as learn more about state-of the-art e-Research being conducted across MU campus. We are extremely pleased to have a Christine represent MARRTC in this program and to receive such a nice distinction for her work," Smarr said.

The Missouri Arthritis Research Rehabilitation and Training Center (MARRTC) was established in 1971 at the University of Missouri-Columbia Arthritis Center. MARRTC is funded by the U.S. Department of Education's National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (H133B031120) and is the only federally funded arthritis rehabilitation research and training center in the country.

As part of the MU Health Communication Research Center (HCRC), MARRTC's mission is to become a national leader in the areas of disability management and communication, improve the quality of life and promote independent living among people who have arthritis and arthritic conditions. MARRTC's core message is "Disability is everyone's issue."
