Central Missouri Regional Arthritis Center Relocates

Columbia, Mo. (August. 17, 2006) The Central Missouri Regional Arthritis Center in Columbia, MO, has recently moved from Parkade Center to Stephens College campus, alongside community health, wellness and research center, the Health Connection.

The regional arthritis center (CEMRAC) operation at the new site began August 1, says Missouri Arthritis and Osteoporosis Program (MAOP) manager Beth Richards. The new Health Connection facility opened in early July. The new address for both facilities is 1507 E. Broadway, Stephens College Campus, Hillcrest Hall, Columbia, MO 65215. The contact numbers are 573-882-8097 for CEMRAC and 573-882-1718 for the Health Connection.

CEMRAC is one of seven regional arthritis centers in Missouri, which are part of a statewide network run by MAOP. The only statewide arthritis program of its kind, CEMRAC helps Missouri serve as a model for other states in providing arthritis care to local communities.

The regional arthritis centers offer a variety of services from self-management and exercise programs to community resource referrals. Local and regional rheumatology professionals present the latest in arthritis health care at public forums hosted by the centers. Regional arthritis centers also partner with key organizations and local volunteers to also bring these services conveniently to others in surrounding communities.

Run by the University of Missouri (MU) School of Health Professions, the Health Connection is ranked among the top ten wellness centers by the National Council on Aging. Staffed with exercise specialists, personal trainers and registered nurses, the center provides members with a wide range of group fitness classes, therapy, personal training, and Travel Connections (vaccines and education when traveling abroad).

"The new Health Connection offers the same excellent service and staff in a non-intimidating environment," says Jenny Workman, director of the Health Connection, who expects to see increased membership among faculty, staff and students from MU and Stephens College, as the result of "a much nicer and more centrally located facility."

The Missouri Arthritis Research Rehabilitation and Training Center (MARRTC) was established in 1971 at the University of Missouri-Columbia Arthritis Center. MARRTC is funded by the U.S. Department of Education's National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (H133B031120) and is the only federally funded arthritis rehabilitation research and training center in the country.

As part of the MU Health Communication Research Center (HCRC), MARRTC's mission is to become a national leader in the areas of disability management and communication, improve the quality of life and promote independent living among people who have arthritis and arthritic conditions. MARRTC's core message is "Disability is everyone's issue."
