Cabin Fever in St. Louis
While most kids are outside enjoying an exciting snowfall, for kids with arthritis, those cold temperatures can make their joints more painful, it can also leave them out of this outdoor fun. But the 18th Annual Cabin Fever Weekend, hosted by the Eastern Missouri Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation, will give children with arthritis and their families a great opportunity to revel in warm, fiesta fun February 9 and 10 at the Holiday Inn West Airport in Earth City, Missouri.
"Cabin Fever is a chance for children with arthritis and their families to connect with other children living with the disease," says Stephanie Stangl, public relations coordinator of the Easter Missouri Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation.
Cabin Fever Weekend is a time when children with arthritis and their families come together for some FUN! Activities will include crafts, swimming, carnival, tea party, scavenger hunt and slumber party for the children. Parents will enjoy a peer-to-peer workshop, stress management discussion, and trivia night. Pediatric rheumatologists will also be available to answer questions during "Doc in the Box."
About 300,000 children nationally have arthritis. "Children with arthritis often feel alone because they have an 'old person's disease' that many feel they shouldn't have," says Stangl. "Cabin Fever is a fun weekend to reassure children with arthritis that they are not alone and to take a break from pain medications and doctor's visits and just be kids."
All families who have a child under 18-years-old with arthritis or any other rheumatic disease are eligible to attend Cabin Fever Weekend. The cost is just $50 per family and scholarships are available. For more information, visit www.arthritis.org or contact Stephanie Stangl at sstangl@arthritis.org.
The Missouri Arthritis Research Rehabilitation and Training Center (MARRTC) was established in 1971 at the University of Missouri-Columbia Arthritis Center. MARRTC is funded by the U.S. Department of Education's National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (H133B031120) and is the only federally funded arthritis rehabilitation research and training center in the country.
As part of the MU Health Communication Research Center (HCRC), MARRTC's mission is to become a national leader in the areas of disability management and communication, improve the quality of life and promote independent living among people who have arthritis and arthritic conditions. MARRTC's core message is "Disability is everyone's issue."
