MARRTC Researcher Receives Regional Citation for Excellence
Columbia, Mo. (Feb. 26, 2001) - Christy Clark, a graduate research assistant with the Arthritis Rehabilitation Center: Training in Careers (ARCTIC), received the Regional Commission's Citation for Excellence.
The Social Security Administration will present the award on April 5, 2001, in Kansas City, Mo., at an honors banquet. Only four to eight such awards are given annually in this region, which includes Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska and Iowa.
The citation nomination says Clark excels beyond expectations, often handling more cases than full-time caseworkers, without compromising accuracy or the care and concern extended to clients.
At ARCTIC, Clark is a vocational counselor for adults with arthritis who are seeking re-employment. ARCTIC helps people who have work-related functional limitations due to arthritis continue working.
ARCTIC is a research project of the Missouri Arthritis Rehabilitation Research and Training Center.
Through ARCTIC, adults with arthritis receive an evaluation by a rheumatologist, an occupational therapist, a physical therapist and job assessments as well as career counseling. ARCTIC has served 40 clients and has six active participants.
ARCTIC referrals must come from local Vocational Rehabilitation offices.
In her other position, Clark is a senior disability counselor with the Disability Determination Services Office of the Social Security Administration, which is administered by the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation in Missouri.
Clark conducts reviews of adults who receive federal disability payments such as Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security Disability Insurance.
These reviews involve gathering and evaluating medical and vocational information to decide whether a person can work or whether federal disability payments should be continued.
Clark brought this experience to ARCTIC when she joined the project last year and received her master's degree in rehabilitation counseling in July from the University of Missouri-Columbia. Clark is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in counseling psychology at MU.
